《天下第一》應該是胡金銓自得其樂但旁人卻未得其樂的一部作品。一部布景、道具講究的宮廷戲，能看出胡金銓對中國文化一貫細致入微的描繪。在故事的情節，能看出來導演想講一個圓環套圓環層層遞進最終卻猝然終結于小概率事件的故事，但就像胡金銓自己說的，他更喜歡拍簡單故事，《天下第一》在講好故事的努力中忽略了胡金銓真正的功力之所在，剪輯、運鏡等都不再出彩，更為遺憾的是，故事本身也并沒有講的很好，繁簡不均，容易讓人一頭霧水。
